CLIMATE & HISTORY
The Baja Peninsula, a long finger of
land lying on the Pacific Ocean below California, USA. The peninsula
was separated from the mainland states of Sonora and Jalisco millions
of years ago through volcanic movement and earthquakes creating the
Sea of Cortez and this 1,100 mile long area of land isolated from
mainland Mexico. This beautiful area of land is speckled with islands
on both the Pacific and the Sea of Cortez sides.
The entire peninsula was named Baja
California until 1974, when the Mexican Government recognized the
lower territory as an independent state, naming if Baja California
Sur. In addition to it’s unique geographical history, Baja has a brief
human history of just 550 years. When Spaniard explorers first
attempted to conquer the Baja, they arrived to find Cape region
settled by a small group of Indians of Polynesian decent. These were
the Pericues. Pericues lived in grass shelters by fresh water
streams in small groups. They lived a simple life with little of no
clothing, hunting and gathering their food. They were frequently
visited by pirates on their return from Atlantic crossings.
The last 50 miles of the Peninsula
comprise the Los Cabos or Cape region, with a 20 mile stretch at the
tip between the two towns of San Jose del Cabo and Cabo San Lucas
begin the “tourist corridor” today. Outstanding properties, world
class golf and white sandy beaches abound.
San Jose del Cabo was officially
founded by Jesuit priest in 1730 when they built their first mission.
Today’s San Jose retains all the natural charm of a quaint Mexican
village, although a touristy area has developed around it’s beautiful
beaches.
Cabo San Lucas was far behind San
Jose until the last decade. Cabo San Lucas Bay was a haven for
pirates, and those who stayed behind became fishermen. Until the years
60’s and 70’s Cabo San Lucas was a little fishing village with a tuna
fish cannery. In the 80’s, hotels were built and a bustling tourist
resort grew from seashells up!
